The term “man boobs” may sound funny to a man who doesn’t struggle to take off their shirt at the beach, but for those suffering from gynecomastia, it’s anything but. At least 30 percent of males are affected by gynecomastia at some point during their lifetime, and actually, it’s the most common condition affecting breast tissue in men. Contrary to what many people think, gynecomastia is not necessarily caused by weight gain. Although obesity can certainly have an impact on gynecomastia, men at any weight can develop the condition. The cause is most frequently hormonal, due to an imbalance between estrogen and androgens. This can be due to an increase in estrogen production, a decrease in androgen production, or both. The resulting enlargement of glandular tissue behind the nipples, also known as “man boobs,” is not considered a serious medical condition.
